Oscars | Best and Worst Dressed

Best Dressed, Celebrities No Comments by girlintheyellowcab

So, I thought that this Monday could continue with my usual Monday Mayhem. I totally forgot that the Oscar’s were on, and of course had to substitute Monday Mayhem for the Best and Worst Dressed List. I was pleasantly surprised when configuring my list that there were far more best dressed than worst. Unfortunately, for those that have been on my worst dressed list before will find themselves appearing on it again.

BEST DRESSED:

Celine Dion is absolutely breathtaking in this Giorgio Armani gown. The  deep neck line looks very nice and is played off well by covering her arms and legs. Celine definitely knows how to dress her hour-glass figure.

Scarlett Johanson wowed me in this Dolce and Gabbana lace gown. The cut-out and natuarl hair make this look very fun, sexy, and sweet. Not to mention I love the color!

Gwyneth Paltrow was also featured on my Best Dressed List from the Grammy Awards. Wow, has she got it going on in this Calvin Klein gown. The high slit compiments the same slit neck-line very well. Her straight gold locks also add to the simplicity of the dress.

This was honestly one of my favorites. Mila Kunis in this Elie Saab gown is just everything an Oscar gown should be. The lilac and lace are just beautiful! Very sweet and soft for the Black Swan star.

Originally, Sandra Bullock was on my worst dressed list. That was as of last night. However, this morning I thought that she photographed beautifully in this Vera Wang gown. She could have used a light Pre-Oscar glow so the tomato red wasn’t such a shocker next to her light skin. But the back of this dress is stunning and her up-do is the perfect way to give all of the attention to the gown.

Amy Adam in this L’Wren Scott  gown is beautiful. I love the shocking dark blue color of this dress. However, I’m not a fan of the Cartier necklace. I would never wear a necklace with that neckline and I was hoping for some cascading earrings. Actually maybe just some studded earrings with her flowing locks.

Is it possible for the same person to be on both my best and worst dressed list? I guess it is when you have eight wardrobe changes. I personally loved Anne Hathaway as the host of the Oscars last night. She was so sweet and charming. You could tell she was so excited to be there. I had my favorites and my least favorites of her wardrobe choices for the night. This one, was definitely one of my favorites.

WORST DRESSED:

Nicole Kidman, once again, made my worst dressed list along with many others. This Asian-inspired gown is just so not flattering. Critics have been saying it’s way too busy. I have to agree, but would also add the awful color. It’s just not Oscar-worthy and looks like something that would be better placed on a sale rack!  Keith Urban, however, is a great accessory.

Jennifer Hudson in this tangerine Versace dress is one of my worst dressed. I truly love the design of the dress and if it wasn’t for the material looking so cheap, she would have been on my best dressed list. It totally took away from the beauty of the gown. But, I have to give it to her for the show-stopping color!

I thought I was going to be the only one who didn’t like this dress after all of the positive tweets I was reading last night. But, I’ve found Cate Blanchett on a few worst dressed lists, along with mine. I’m just not a fan of the cutout top thats framing her boobs. It’s not flattering.

Florence Welch is once again gracing my worst dressed list. This vintage inspired dress is just-yuck. The color makes her completely unnoticeable.

I know that this Dior gown worn by Sharon Stone was a favorite among many. However, it did nothing for me! It reminds me of Cruella Deville with the large feather applique on her right shoulder and her over-the-top poof.

This was my least favorite of Anne Hathaway’s wardrobe choices. For one, it looks like it’s extremely hard to move in and reminds me of something that should be worn on the Star Wars space ship.

Who was your best and worst dressed? Comment below or e-mail me at girlintheyellowcab@gmail.com!

Grammy Awards | Best and Worst Dressed

Best Dressed, Celebrities No Comments by girlintheyellowcab

Millions of people tuned into the the 53rd Grammy Awards last night whether you were watching for the drama, the fashion, the celebrities, or the performances. I have my favorite fashions for the Grammy’s and I also have my not-so-favorite. In terms of the performances last night- off the hook. My favorites were, in no specific order: Jaden Smith with Bieber and Usher, Eminem and Rihanna, and Gwyneth Paltrow and Cee Low Green. Now onto the juicy stuff.

Best Dressed:

I know there was a lot of buzz about Miley Cyrus and her dress with all of the bangles and bracelets. I absolutely loved it and is one of my favorites for the night. From the hair, to the dress, to the accessories it was great. I would totally wear this.

Jennifer Hudson was absolutely perfect in her Grammy stunner and new body. Wow. I love how she plays up the straps in her gown with the ones on her shoes. Beautiful.

Gwyneth Paltrow didn’t walk the red carpet, but when she came out for the duo performance with Cee Low Green, she looked insanely fabulous. Can you believe she is almost 40? If I could look half that good at age 40. Oh, and those shoes. Bow chica wow wow.

Jaden Smith, what an absolute cutie on stage! Loved the cheetah pants. Proud parents were in the crowd as Will Smith mouthed, “That’s my baby” during his performance with Bieber and Usher.

J-Lo was looking hot at the Grammys showing off one of her best assets- those legs.  And those shoes, yeoow. Love it!

Kim Kardashian is always a bombshell. But this gold gown with nude shoes-wow. Pre-Grammy Awards Kardashian actually couldn’t fit the dress over her butt. Thanks to her fabulous stylist, it was altered in time for the red carpet. You’d never know!

Worst Dressed:

Gretchin, Gretchin, Gretchin. This is a red carpet event, not a night out at the club. Totally inappropriate for the Grammy’s.

I think Nicki Minaj thinks she is Lady Gaga. Like what is this?

Okay, I love this powerhouse couple! But, Nicole Kidman is hardly ever one on my best dressed lists. She has a great figure and should work it with something more visually appealing.

Florence Welch is on my worst dressed lists for sure. This entire ensemble just makes me cringe. Whoever, it is a great color for her.

Christina Aguilera hasn’t been having a good couple of weeks. I thought her Super Bowl outfit was sloppy, and so was her performance. But, last night her performance was very powerful-maybe a bit too much, but her wardrobe just lacked again. I think the hair did it for me.

So, who did it and didn’t do it for you?! Would love to know!

NYFW 2011 | Patrik Ervell at Milk

I was so pumped for this show for two reasons – one, we were going to be able to meet Patrik Ervell himself and two, I got to spend a day at fashion week over my birthday. I mean, what more could a girl ask for?!

I brought a girlfriend of mine who works in PR from the city to the show. She was a virgin to fashion week, so I thought what better way to break her in! Needless to say, she had a blast.

The show was brilliant. There were large white drapings that resembled parachutes down the runway, fans blowing, and the menswear ensembles all pieced together painted a picture of World War II inspirations. There were jumpsuits, bomber jackets, sweaters, button down shirts, slim dress pants and nothing but greatness. You definitely got the feeling of Ervell’s love for uniform, military, and precision during his show.

Photos from style.com

After the show ended, we were escorted backstage to meet Mr. Ervell himself. Who knew that such a successful, menswear designer, and New Yorker at that, would be so shy. His talent is out of this world and the modesty he prevailed to all of the compliments, photographers, and press was a breath of fresh air. Successful people in this business who have an attitude and gratefulness like Ervell are the ones I will root for ten times harder.

You see, as we were waiting to meet Mr. Ervell, two other ‘older’ women in line- I mention the word ‘older’ because their attitude definitely contradicted their age-they were asked if they would like to take a picture with him now. The one woman’s response was, “Oh no, I’m not into that. You see we were at the Emmy’s this past summer. We were on the red carpet and everything.” Are you kidding me?! If you’re so la-ti- dah with yourself, then why are you here at such a show anyways? She probably swiped her American Express Card so fast for that Emmy ticket she left her manners with it. Couldn’t even congratulate or afford a compliment to the designer. Okay, off my soapbox now.

So, Patrik Ervell was great. He talked about his vision for the show and how hard some of the looks were to make-like the military jacket. Also behind stage, was Kirsten Dunst in of course, Patrik Ervell that he made specifically for her. I couldn’t resit going up to her and asking for a picture, I mean come on, Spiderman and Bring It On? It was a must. What a sweetheart she was about it too.

It is such an honor to show at Milk Studios because they are only allowed to show 35 designers per year here. The designers are chosen by people like the Editor of Vogue Magazine, Anna Wintour, which is absolutely huge. Not to mention, Mac & Milk come together to help support emerging designers and all designers are able to put on a show at no cost. Wow.

I also have to mention, the staff at Milk Studios was great to us and made our experience all the better. What a place to work as well. Each month, they build a restaurant in the warehouse building, depending on whatever cuisine they are feeling that month. After work there is a bar that all employees can go to and hang out and have a drink. They have what’s called a JAM room in the basement. The JAM room is basically blown up instruments such as drums, a guitar, etc. Celebrities and staff stop by whenever they feel like they need a JAM session. Talk about awesome.

The Kardashians to QVC

Celebrities No Comments by girlintheyellowcab

I’m a huge fan of the E network show, Keeping up with the Kardashians. I just heard that the sisters are launching a new fashion line with QVC. After six weeks of trying to get the girls in for an interview, WWD finally was able to interview Kim and Kourtney. Unfortunately, six weeks wasn’t enough time to get three sisters together in the same city as Khloe wasn’t able to make it.

The QVC line, K-Dash, will make its debut in a runway show during New York Fashion Week on September 10th. Two additional appearances will be made in September again and October also with mother Kris Jenner. But, if you can imagine, they will be taking turns on these appearances because it is almost impossible to get the sisters together at the same time, in the same place. The three sisters have also been working on their collection at Bebe which debuted this past February, a line with Jupi Corp scheduled to debut next year, their Dash stores, and of course their E network show, Keeping Up With the Kardashians.

I was a little disappointed when I found out that the girls really aren’t going to be involved in the design aspect of the line. Of course, what else did I expect? They’re millionaires with the right contacts, who don’t have enough time to spend on designing a line. I can think about a hundred  aspiring designers who would kill to have an opportunity like that. Unfortunately for us, that’s how the cookie crumbles. However, the Kardashians will have a say on each garment. No garment will go into production without the final approval of the sisters. “If one of us doesn’t like it, it’s gone,” Kourtney said. “You want it to be the best of the best. We all have to love everything.”

Ginny Hilfiger, sister of Tommy, will be the one in charge of designing and  producing the line for K-Dash. “Every time you go to drug store Duane Reade, their picture is on every cover of every magazine,” Hilfiger said. “I’m standing in Duane Reade researching the people I’m designing for.”

The collection will consist of contemporary sportswear and handbags. The retail prices will run from $19.50 for a fake leather wrap belt, to $49.50 for denim leggings, to $239 for a pebble leather handbag.

“QVC reaches a different audience than we’re used to,” said Kim, as she inspected K-Dash’s belted knit vest trimmed in fake fur at QVC’s showroom. “We always welcome that.” I’d say it’s a pretty good idea seeing as the  QVC network reaches 98 million U.S. households.

The line, consisting of 75 pieces, will be sold in department stores, specialty stores and online beginning in January of 2011. I can’t wait to check it out!

Justin Timberlake to Target

Good Evening Fashionistas,

This is just a little short tid bit I wanted to share with you on this beautiful summer evening for a few reasons. One, I love Target, or Tarshae, whichever you prefer. Second, I love William Rast. William Rast is a fashion line by Justin Timebrlake and his childhood friend Trace Ayala that is most commonly known for their denim. When I was working with Marie Claire, William Rast was always coming into the closet and being used for shoots. Very popular with the New Yorkers.

Target announced today that the collection will include denim, outerwear, and sportswear for men and women. The collection will launch in December of this year, but will only be available for one month.William Rast will be joining other Target partnerships such as Zac Posen, Jean Paul Gaultier, Rodarte, and Proenza Schouler. You can definitely be confident that you’ve made it in the fashion world when your garments are being featured at Target.

The typical William Rast look is casual, with an emphasis on jeans and leather jackets. The fall runway collection, presented earlier this year at New York Fashion Week, was dubbed “New America” and inspired by road trips between the Mississippi River and the West Coast, Timberlake said.

A girlfriend of mine at Marie Claire actually worked in the William Rast showroom when Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel came in for a private fitting. She said they couldn’t have been nicer and more down to earth. Ms. Biel even struck up conversation with her while she was stripping down into different jeans. Love it!

I’m really excited for this launch, so don’t forget to check it out!

Carrie Underwood’s Big Day

Bridal, Celebrities No Comments by girlintheyellowcab

Carrie Underwood is an artist that has been one of my favorites since her time on American Idol.  If I am going to see country music, she is the first on my list. When I heard that Carrie was engaged back in December, my first reaction was, “She’s dating someone?” That someone was hockey phenomenon, Mike Fischer. The couple’s engagement lasted for a little over 6 months and they wed this past Saturday in Georgia at the Ritz Carlton Reynolds Plantation.

Carrie graces the cover of the new People Magazine Issue in her beautiful Monique Lhuillier chantilly lace and silk organza gown. The designer also created a strapless cocktail dress for Carrie to change into after the ceremony.

Do you see that beautiful tiara graciously resting on her head? It was a gift from the hubby on their wedding day. A whopping 40 carats of diamonds were beautifully strewn through the entire tiara. No big deal or anything. Did I mention they rented out the entire hotel for their guests to stay as well? Yes, all 250 of them. Cha ching.

Carrie was quoted in People saying, “There was pink lighting and pink things having from the ceiling, flower ball and ribbon and sparkles.” But hubby, Mike Fischer, did add his own little touch to the feminine mix. The table assignments were placed on painted hockey pucks. Love it.

Country music is something that I grew up with, it’s in my blood. It’s one of the main connections I have with my dad since I was a little girl. It brings me back to my childhood and I will forever love and cherish it.

Sincerely,

The Heroin Diaries of Nikki Sixx

Celebrities, Favorite Books 1 Comment by girlintheyellowcab

As of last night, I knew exactly what I was going to blog about today. That is until The Heroin Diaries of Nikki Sixx fell into my hands.  Prior to last night, I had heard a lot about this book- mainly from those that idolize the band Motley Crue. I knew that if the book had gotten grown men, many who have never finished a book in their lives, to sit down and read it, it must be something worth looking at.

I was borrowing Mommywood, a book by Tori Spelling from a friend, when she also gave the The Heroin Diaries in case my boyfriend wanted to take a look at it. Let’s just say that my boyfriend will have to wait his turn. I absolutely can’t put it down. I even thought about not posting today so that I could try to finish it.  I’m currently half way through the book now and hope to finish it by tonight.

Why the life of a drug, alcohol, and sex addict interests me so much, I’m still not sure. Maybe it’s because deep down I know that if I wasn’t born the fashionista girl that I am, my alter ego would definitely be a hardcore, rocker, tatted up, badass.  So, anytime I can go to a bar with carpet on the walls, adorned with a name you can only picture toothless people in, attached with a scene from a horror film waiting to happen, is definitely something I get some bizarre satisfaction out of.  The lifestyle of a rockstar is so insane, so ridiculous, so entertaining that I would love to be a fly on the wall for just one Saturday night with them.

The Heroin Diaries seriously opens your eyes to the extreme lifestyle of one rockstar from Motley Crue, Nikki Sixx. The book is filled with his personal diaries from the time of his heroin addiction, among many others. The things and events you read about are so above and beyond anything understandable to a normal person. You literally have to read some things over again just to make sure you read it right. Sixx writes down exactly what he is feeling at that exact point in time. He talks about his childhood, his rebellious lifestyle, the music, the girls, the drugs, the alcohol, the loneliness, the withdrawals, the struggle and the hardcore fight to get out.

I don’t care if your idea of a good time is an ugly sweater and a tea party, this is a must read. No matter who you are, where you came from, or what you believe in, it will open your eyes to a completely different world. This book probably helped thousands on the verge of becoming an addict or that already were. He says, “Well it’s simple. If one person reads this book and doesn’t have to go down the same road as me, it was worth sharing my personal hell with them.”

TWILIGHT: ECLIPSE MOVIE REVIEW

Celebrities, Movie Reviews No Comments by girlintheyellowcab

The midnight showing of Eclipse was even crazier than New Moon, which came out last November. There were fans in wardrobes from vampire capes to Team Edward and Jacob t-shirts. When my girlfriends and I arrived at the movie theatre, there were lines already to the door. There were five showings of the film, one at 12:00, 12:01, 12:02, 12:03, and 12:05. Luckily, I had gotten tickets for the 12:05 show and we didn’t have to wait in line. Those hardcore Twilight fans are going to see it at midnight or there not seeing it at all.

So, snacks in hand, fountain drink in the cup holder, we were ready for Edward. And let me tell you, we were not to be dissapointed. This movie, like all reviews and word of mouth have proved, wasn’t lacking in the least. Even so, many have claimed it to be better than the first two films.

Eclipse is steamy, it is smokin’ hot, it is exactly what Twilight fans wanted to see. Of course, there were plenty of scenes with Jacob’s shirt off, and too many scenes with Edward’s on.

Bella wore more make-up in Eclipse which added to the beauty of her character. The werewolves were also animated fabulously. When it comes to animation in a real-life movie, there are many times it isn’t done very well. But, I thought that the animation and graphics were even better than before. Well done, well done.

My favorite scene was when Bella, Edward, and Jacob are inside the tent on the mountain waiting for the big fight. Jacob is warm blooded and has to snuggle up with Bella in order to keep her warm and of course, there is nothing Edward can do. Bella is the most important person to him, and he will do whatever it takes to keep her safe; even if it means she has to cuddle with Jacob. This is the first time Edward and Jacob actually have a civilized, non-violent conversation about their love for Bella in a quest to understand both sides. Thank goodness. Something different needed to happen besides the same smart remarks and puffed up chests everytime they saw eachother.

The part that I didn’t like, more than a lot, was when Bella kissed Jacob in front of Edward. I wanted to reach through the screen, shake her, and yell, “What are you thinking??” Thankfully, the ending came just as I had hoped; a ring and soon-to-be wedding.  I absolutely can’t wait for the next movie, in TWO parts. Yay!

And because I don’t think I can wait to know what happens next, I may just have to take up reading the books and become another obsessed Twilight fan. It happens to the best of us.

Sincerely,

THE GIRL IN THE YELLOW CAB

ECLIPSE: TONIGHT

Celebrities No Comments by girlintheyellowcab

Today is the day. The day that Twilight fans nationwide have been eagerly awaiting. The premiere of the Twilight Saga: Eclipse. In continuance with our ritual, my girlfriends and I will be making a night out of this!  Getting together for dinner and drinks and then heading over to the theatre, two hours early mind you, to get in line for a great seat.

The last showing we went to, New Moon, I thought it was absolutely ridiculous when my girlfriends said they wanted to get to the theatre at least an hour and a half early. Little did I know, Twilight fans had been seated outside the doors for hours, re-reading their worn novels. So this time, I didn’t argue the point to make it to the theatre a couple of hours earlier.

How about the premiere at the Nokia Palace in L.A. on June 21st? Fans were camped out for days in order to be the first to catch a glimpse of the werewolves.

And did you see Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson? Smokin’ hot.   Stewart wore a skin-tight white embroidered wool mini dress with a sexy cutout back adorned wtih white stiletto heels. Of course this isn’t the Stewart we are used to seeing; normally  rocking a t-shirt, jeans and sneakers. Don’t be fooled, she wasn’t dressed up for long because she quickly changed for the after party into skinny jeans, a tank top and low sneakers.

I remember recently watching The Oprah Winfrey Show with the cast of Twilight as featured guests. What I find absolutely astonishing and yet, satisfying is the fact that Kristen or Bella are basically the same people. Everything from her mannerisms, to her personality, to her style are exactly as they are on Twilight. And I feel that’s an aspect that truly connects Twilight fans to the characters. When you know that Bella is so closely related to Kristen Stewart not only in character, but out, it almost makes you more interested, and more of a fan. That is something that I truly love about her.

And so far, I’ve heard nothing but blood sucking good things about Eclipse. Apparently it’s hotter and smokier than ever. I’ve even heard that Eclipse is better than the previous two films! I absolutely can’t wait to see it. Stay tuned for the Eclipse movie review on Thursday!

Sincerely,

THE GIRL IN THE YELLOW CAB

Team Edward or Team Jacob?

Celebrities No Comments by girlintheyellowcab

I’m not sure I know of many that won’t be standing in line to see the new, highly anticipated film, Twilight Saga: Eclipse.  I’ve already purchased my midnight showing ticket with a few of my girlfriends, now a regular ritual.

Although I must admit, I haven’t gotten into the entire Twilight craze. For instance, I haven’t read any of the books. Shocking, I know. Actually, the only reason I went to see the first movie was because it was that, or sit at home alone with my dog. Leaning towards girl time, I went, not really into the whole vampire scene that my girlfriens informed me about. Let’s just say by the time I was throwing my popcorn in the garbage and headed out of the movie, I was hooked.

I couldn’t wait for the next one to come out. My friends begged me to start reading the Twilight series because they were that much better than the movie. And I really didn’t give them a chance because I started to read Twilight, but shortly stopped. I couldn’t read what I already knew was going to happen. And therefore, never took advantage of reading the rest. Even after many of my friends have read the novels four or five times.

So, the ultimate question, are you Team Jacob or Team Edward? All in all, I’m team Edward. Why? Don’t get me wrong, Jacob looks great with his shirt off and newly short hair. But, Edward is the whole package; a huge romantic, unquestionably good looking, interesting, charming, honest, and committed. Bella is his precious jewel and he will stop at nothing to protect her. I mean come on, talk about make your heart pitter patter.

I’m extremely excited to see the midnight showing of Eclipse on Tuesday. Running for a seat however, not so much. Stay tuned for the Eclipse movie review!

Sincerely,

THE GIRL IN THE YELLOW CAB
