Wu for Target

Target is the store I spend too much money at on things I don’t really need. It’s my happy place and I just can never walk out empty handed. Jason Wu however, is something I need. I”m super pumped for his collection to debut this Sunday at Target. I’m trying to devise a plan of action as I know previous collections like Missoni and Mulberry were sold out in a matter of minutes. These are a few looks that are on my shopping list! See the full collection here.

New York Fashion Week

I just got back from NY Fashion Week yesterday and I always leave feeling so refreshed and motivated. New York is a city that completely brings me back to life in itself, so you can only imagine the extra oomph fashion week adds.  I love finding finding raw trends and observing how every individual and designer interprets them differently. As much as I love the fashion shows, cat walk, press, models, photographers, and high anticipation before each and every show, nothing beats the street talent of individuals that style themselves simply for the love and art of fashion.

{Denim +chambray combo, nude pumps and Chanel quilted bag}

{Ray-Ban’s, buns, peep toes, brights and muted colors}

{vest, scarf, bowling bag and white after labor day}

As I was browsing through the Spring/Summer 2011 lines, I couldn’t resist but share them with you! So many designers, so many favorites. Here’s a little taste of some of my favorite looks for this season along with trends and color palettes to keep your eyes open for!

United Bamboo

I could truly go on forever, but I’ll stop there. So the conclusion? This Spring/Summer we’re seeing a lot of muted colors paired with brights, flowing silhouettes, cinched waists, boyfriend blazers, plunging necklines and chunky heels. Love!

Balmain S/S 2011

How on earth did I miss Balmain’s S/S ’11 Collection from Paris?! This collection is totally me just blown all over the runway. I love this punk studded style. If you haven’t heard me say it before, you’ll hear me say it now: my alter-ego is a total half-sleeve tatted, I- can-throw-a-punch-better-than-you, bad-ass. But a really cute one, of course. For now though, I love to bring this style out of the closet more often than not!

This Spring/Summer ’11 collection doesn’t contain the usual flower prints and pastel colors and that’s what I love about it! Yes, it’s fun to find silk empire skirts adorned with flowers painted the colors of the rainbow and dream of Spring, but this line is fierce. And fierce for Spring with these studded motorcycle jackets, cropped trousers, leather shorts, sequined blazers, and ripped tees. Makes me all excited!

Do you love this line?!

NYFW 2011 | Patrik Ervell at Milk

I was so pumped for this show for two reasons – one, we were going to be able to meet Patrik Ervell himself and two, I got to spend a day at fashion week over my birthday. I mean, what more could a girl ask for?!

I brought a girlfriend of mine who works in PR from the city to the show. She was a virgin to fashion week, so I thought what better way to break her in! Needless to say, she had a blast.

The show was brilliant. There were large white drapings that resembled parachutes down the runway, fans blowing, and the menswear ensembles all pieced together painted a picture of World War II inspirations. There were jumpsuits, bomber jackets, sweaters, button down shirts, slim dress pants and nothing but greatness. You definitely got the feeling of Ervell’s love for uniform, military, and precision during his show.

Photos from style.com

After the show ended, we were escorted backstage to meet Mr. Ervell himself. Who knew that such a successful, menswear designer, and New Yorker at that, would be so shy. His talent is out of this world and the modesty he prevailed to all of the compliments, photographers, and press was a breath of fresh air. Successful people in this business who have an attitude and gratefulness like Ervell are the ones I will root for ten times harder.

You see, as we were waiting to meet Mr. Ervell, two other ‘older’ women in line- I mention the word ‘older’ because their attitude definitely contradicted their age-they were asked if they would like to take a picture with him now. The one woman’s response was, “Oh no, I’m not into that. You see we were at the Emmy’s this past summer. We were on the red carpet and everything.” Are you kidding me?! If you’re so la-ti- dah with yourself, then why are you here at such a show anyways? She probably swiped her American Express Card so fast for that Emmy ticket she left her manners with it. Couldn’t even congratulate or afford a compliment to the designer. Okay, off my soapbox now.

So, Patrik Ervell was great. He talked about his vision for the show and how hard some of the looks were to make-like the military jacket. Also behind stage, was Kirsten Dunst in of course, Patrik Ervell that he made specifically for her. I couldn’t resit going up to her and asking for a picture, I mean come on, Spiderman and Bring It On? It was a must. What a sweetheart she was about it too.

It is such an honor to show at Milk Studios because they are only allowed to show 35 designers per year here. The designers are chosen by people like the Editor of Vogue Magazine, Anna Wintour, which is absolutely huge. Not to mention, Mac & Milk come together to help support emerging designers and all designers are able to put on a show at no cost. Wow.

I also have to mention, the staff at Milk Studios was great to us and made our experience all the better. What a place to work as well. Each month, they build a restaurant in the warehouse building, depending on whatever cuisine they are feeling that month. After work there is a bar that all employees can go to and hang out and have a drink. They have what’s called a JAM room in the basement. The JAM room is basically blown up instruments such as drums, a guitar, etc. Celebrities and staff stop by whenever they feel like they need a JAM session. Talk about awesome.

The Recession Even Affects the Famous

There is no doubt that we are in a recession right now. You can see it everywhere, from nation low unemployment rates, to company bailouts, increasing national debt,  and massive cut-backs on consumer discretionary spending. Sometimes I’m sure it’s easy to think that it’s only happening to you. But, the recession has even affected the lives of the fabulous.

Betsey Johnson recently defaulted on her $48.8 million loan in early September. Luckily, Steve Madden, who already owned licenses for accessories under both Betsey Johnson and Betseyville brands, came in and saved the brand.  Madden took over the loan, resulting in complete bailout for Betsey Johnson. Additionally, Madden bought out her trademarks and officially owns the company.

For those that are huge Betsey Johnson fans, no need to worry. Betsey will continue to be in charge of all design aspects of the company. Maddens new plan for the company is to increase marketing and strengthen the daytime dress and shoe business. Thus, hiring coordinators and stylists will be the first of new hires. Steve Madden also plans to make footwear 30% of the total sales within the year, how ironic. Honestly though, I do believe that increasing the footwear sales is a smart decision on Madden’s part. Not just because of his experience, but because I truly believe that’s if any fashionista is willing to splurge on something, it’s on a pair of shoes.

Madden told WWD in his interview, “Betsey is my partner. She has nothing to worry about and I will protect her.…She is not on the hook for anything. I am honored to be partners with her. That’s the truth.”

But, this is one tight 25 year old relationship that Madden and Johnson have. When things were rough for Madden in 2004, he was sent to prison for 41 months for stock manipulation, money laundering, and fraud, Betsey was there by his side.

This article is proof that the recession takes no prisoners. It effects everyone from the bottom of the food chain to the top. I’m looking forward to seeing what Madden has in store for the Betsey Brand. More shoes please!

Sincerely,

Dolce and Gabbana Share the Wealth

How awesome is this! I was just reading an article from WWD about Dolce and Gabbana’s new accessory store that just opened in Milan. Not only are they carrying their Dolce and Gabbana line, but also the lines of young, emerging designers. Wow, I can’t even imagine getting that phone call. Gabbana had stated in the interview that many of the designers “thought that it was a joke.” Lets be honest, how couldn’t you! The brands on offer include Sophie Theallet, Yigal Azrouël, Elisa Palomino, Fausto Puglisi, Behnaz Sarafpour and Heather Williams, with Dolce and Gabbana doing the buying.

The store also offers the young designers a high-profile seal of approval as they build their brands. Gabbana states  how “we turned quite nostalgic, remembering our own early days in the business,” when they were invited to show during Milano Collezioni by Beppe Modenese.  “We were given a chance,” Gabbana said. “We are no longer young but not really old yet, and we feel now it’s our turn to help.

“The boutique offers these young designers more visibility, but this is also a business,” Gabbana said. “We don’t think we are the only designers in the world and not necessarily the best ones — there are plenty of valid designers out there,” continued Gabbana.

The upper level  of the Dolce and Gabbana accessory store is dedicated to the young designers’ collections, each of which has its own section. The lines are also displayed  on the lower level, collaborating with Dolce and Gabbana’s designs as well.

Although, there are no plans to open more stores like this one and therefore will most likely stay in Milan. “We don’t plan to replicate it, we like for it to be something you can find only here,” said Gabbana.

What an awesome experience for the emerging designers. Talk about getting your foot in the door. People will now think, if Dolce and Gabbana can take them seriously, then we will too! I would love to make a pit-stop at the Milan store on my next excursion!

Alexander McQueen Memorial

A memorial service was held today in London for Alexander McQueen, during London Fashion Week, who took his life last February at the age of 40.

“It was a life lived in the public gaze, but it was as vulnerable and retiring as it was glamorous,” the Reverend Canon Giles Fraser told the 1,200 guests. Guests included Sarah Jessica Parker, Daphne Guinness, Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Karen Elson, Stella Tennant, and  Stella McCartney.

In the picture above, SJP was decked out in McQueen. “It was perfect,”  Parker said of the service. “I wouldn’t have missed this for anything in the world. It was just a wonderful way to remember him. It was just beautiful.”

The 70-minute ceremony was one filled with joy and laughter, but also the uncanny reality of McQueen’s life. Suzy Menkes, fashion editor of the International Herald Tribune, spoke at the ceremony.  She told the guests that McQueen’s fashions and theatrical shows were largely autobiographical. It seems those who were close to him can remember his unhappiness and anger in his personal life, which was then portrayed through his work.

After the service, the guests gathered to watch the  National Youth Pipe Band of Scotland assembled on the cathedral steps play in remembrance of McQueen.
This year’s fashion week not only in London, but New York City, was one that still remembered Alexander McQueen. Guests  were sporting anything from McQueen accessories to wardrobes. McQueen was a designer who was truly loved by his fans for his impeccable work and out-of-the-box designs. This  memorial is a proof that his legacy will never die.

Justin Timberlake to Target

Good Evening Fashionistas,

This is just a little short tid bit I wanted to share with you on this beautiful summer evening for a few reasons. One, I love Target, or Tarshae, whichever you prefer. Second, I love William Rast. William Rast is a fashion line by Justin Timebrlake and his childhood friend Trace Ayala that is most commonly known for their denim. When I was working with Marie Claire, William Rast was always coming into the closet and being used for shoots. Very popular with the New Yorkers.

Target announced today that the collection will include denim, outerwear, and sportswear for men and women. The collection will launch in December of this year, but will only be available for one month.William Rast will be joining other Target partnerships such as Zac Posen, Jean Paul Gaultier, Rodarte, and Proenza Schouler. You can definitely be confident that you’ve made it in the fashion world when your garments are being featured at Target.

The typical William Rast look is casual, with an emphasis on jeans and leather jackets. The fall runway collection, presented earlier this year at New York Fashion Week, was dubbed “New America” and inspired by road trips between the Mississippi River and the West Coast, Timberlake said.

A girlfriend of mine at Marie Claire actually worked in the William Rast showroom when Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel came in for a private fitting. She said they couldn’t have been nicer and more down to earth. Ms. Biel even struck up conversation with her while she was stripping down into different jeans. Love it!

I’m really excited for this launch, so don’t forget to check it out!

Sincerely,
